3.0 RTM, Oculus VR, Indie Tier, and Black Friday Discounts
We’ve wrapped up this major release and a lot of great things are now available.
DragonRuby Game Toolkit 3.0 Improvements
You should see massive performance improvements. 3.0 is generally 2x to 3x faster than 2.0, with specific areas seeing a 16x boost in performance. DragonRuby 2.0 was already able to render 2x as many sprites as Unity. With the release of 3.0, DragonRuby is capable of rendering five times as many sprites than Unity, with a binary output that is six times smaller.
Here’s a demo:
Over the last year, the number of sample apps has increased tremendously. We now have samples covering platforming, pathfinding, rpgs of all types (classic, topdown, tactical, action), crafting games, tower defense, fighting games, metroidvanias, shooters (bullet hell, twinstick), and roguelikes. All the samples are open-source and can be found here (they are also part of the engine download of course).
Pro license holders now have access to DragonRuby VR Toolkit. This is a big deal. VR can be intimidating to get into, but with this new product, we’ve significantly lowered the barrier to entry.
Here’s a video that shows how you can take your existing 2D games and transition them to VR:
With this addition, the Pro license’s price has been increased. Anyone who currently has a Pro subscription will be grandfathered in with their current subscription price and will NOT see a price increase EVER.
Pro Features in Development
The Pro offering for DragonRuby will continue to expand. Here’s what we have slated for Q1 of 2022:
- Triangle Primitive Rendering: Apis that will allow you to render and blend with triangular regions (a fundamental building block for 3D games).
- HD Mode: Progressive texture rendering from 720p all the way up to 4K.
- All Screen Mode: Ability to build games that are compatible with many different aspect ratios (eg: 16:9, 19:9, 21:9).
- Portrait Mode: Ability to create games in portrait mode (great for mobile games).
Indie Tier (Limited Time Discount)
Given that not everyone has a VR headset, or wants to create mobile games we’ve created a cheaper Indie tier that hopefully hits a sweet spot between capabilities and price.
In celebration of the launch, we’re giving 50% off the first subscription year of your Indie License. Use the coupon code
